Assam Flood Toll Reaches 61; CM Says Relief Yet To Reach 80K People, Centre-Led Team To Visit

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 7.05 lakh people have been affected across nine districts.

The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Friday, with the death toll rising to 61 after 14 more people lost their lives in the past 24 hours. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government was still unable to deliver relief materials to around 80,000 affected people as several areas remained cut off.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 7.05 lakh people have been affected across nine districts.

Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, with nearly 3.5 lakh people affected, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat. A total of 856 villages remain under water, while over 56,600 hectares of crop area have been damaged.

80,000 People Yet To Receive Relief

Addressing a press conference, Sarma said around 50,000 people in Nazira and another 30,000 in parts of Sivasagar were still beyond the reach of relief teams.

“We are trying very hard to reach all the people with relief items, but still many are left out," he said, adding that roads in many areas were covered with thick layers of silt and mud despite floodwaters beginning to recede.

The chief minister said ministers had been stationed in the three worst-hit districts of Upper Assam, while additional boats, relief materials and essential supplies were being mobilised. He added that previous attempts to airdrop relief failed because the supplies were damaged, and the state would discuss better packaging methods with the Indian Air Force.

BJP MLA Mayur Borgohain also said nearly 30 per cent of the affected areas in his Nazira constituency had not received relief, with some villages still lacking even drinking water.

Centre Team To Assess Flood Damage

ASDMA said seven people died in Charaideo, six in Sivasagar and one in Jorhat during the last 24 hours. The administration is currently operating 363 relief camps and distribution centres, sheltering more than 1.15 lakh displaced people.

Around 40,000 households remain without electricity, although power has been restored to nearly 75 per cent of consumers.

Sarma said exceptionally heavy rainfall in Assam and neighbouring Nagaland, with some areas recording up to 493 per cent above-normal rainfall, had triggered the severe floods.

He added that a central government team would visit Assam to assess the flood damage, while a detailed loss assessment would begin once currently inaccessible areas become reachable.

“A comprehensive assessment of the damage will take a few more days, as some areas remain inaccessible. The loss assessment will be carried out systematically. A central government team will visit the state tomorrow to assess the impact of the floods," the CM said.
