Chelsea are set to make Morgan Rogers their record signing in a £117m move from Aston Villa after the England star agreed a six-year deal following his standout World Cup campaign.

Chelsea are on the verge of completing a blockbuster £117 million move for Aston Villa and England star Morgan Rogers, with the attacking midfielder set to become the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
The 23-year-old has agreed personal terms on a six-year contract and is expected to undergo a medical on Monday before sealing the switch to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea Beat Arsenal To Alonso’s Top Target
Arsenal made contact with Villa earlier this month as they explored a move for Rogers, but Chelsea had been tracking the midfielder for much longer and moved decisively to secure his signature.
The transfer is a major statement from new head coach Xabi Alonso, who identified Rogers as one of his priority targets after taking charge in May.
Rogers arrives on the back of a sensational campaign. He played a pivotal role in Aston Villa’s run to the Champions League and Europa League triumph last season, finishing with an impressive return of 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.
He also enhanced his growing reputation at the FIFA World Cup, where he became a key figure in England’s run to the semi-finals. Starting on the right wing against Argentina, Rogers created Anthony Gordon’s opening goal before England ultimately fell to a dramatic 2-1 defeat.
Chelsea Continue Squad Rebuild
Chelsea’s decision to invest heavily in Rogers underlines the scale of their rebuild after a disappointing campaign that left them without European football next season.
The England international will eclipse the £115 million Chelsea paid for Moisés Caicedo in 2023, making him the club’s new record signing.
The Blues have created room for another major investment after cashing in on Marc Cucurella, who joined Real Madrid, and Andrey Santos, who completed a move to Manchester United.
More departures could follow. Enzo Fernández is understood to be keen to leave, with Real Madrid continuing to monitor the Argentina midfielder. Chelsea are also keeping tabs on Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and remain interested in Palace defender Maxence Lacroix.
Villa Cash In After Remarkable Rise
Villa are expected to reinvest the windfall as they reshape Unai Emery’s squad.
Rogers’ rise has been extraordinary. Signed from Middlesbrough for an initial £7 million plus £8 million in add-ons in January 2024, he leaves just 18 months later as the most expensive English footballer ever, edging past the £116 million Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson.
Villa have already sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, while Lucas Digne is also expected to complete a move to Paris Saint-Germain as the club prepares for another busy transfer window.
