Trade tensions between China and Japan intensified on 24th February after China placed 20 Japanese companies on an export control list. Meanwhile, another 20 companies were added to a watchlist. This action followed earlier remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Taiwan.

Under the new restrictions, Chinese exporters are barred from supplying dual-use goods — items with both civilian and military applications — to the 20 blacklisted firms. All ongoing related transactions must stop immediately. The affected companies include subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. In addition, units of Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Fujitsu are also included.

For the additional 20 firms on the watchlist, exporters must apply for special licences. Moreover, they must submit risk assessments to ensure the goods are not used for military purposes. These include Subaru Corporation, Mitsubishi Materials Corporation and the Institute of Science Tokyo.

China said the measures are targeted and lawful, aimed at curbing Japan’s remilitarization, and will not disrupt normal trade ties. The move underscores rising friction between the two nations over Taiwan.
