Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday inspected the ongoing underground cabling works being carried out by Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) in Mysuru to replace existing 11 kV overhead electricity lines with underground cables.

The Chief Minister reviewed the progress of the works at Srirampura and collected information from the CESC officials on the implementation of the project.

During the inspection, Mysuru Circle Superintending Engineer Sunil Kumar briefed the Chief Minister on the status of the underground cabling project being executed within the Ring Road limits of Mysuru city.

The officials informed that the project is being implemented at a cost of ₹588.24 crore and covers conversion of 871.09 km of 11 kV overhead power lines into underground cables. As part of the project, 474 Ring Main Units (RMUs) and 11 Compact Substations (CSS) are proposed to be installed. The work has been entrusted to four different contractors.

So far, underground cabling works covering 227.12 km have been completed and 160 RMUs installed, achieving 26.07% progress. The officials said the project has a completion timeline of two years and necessary measures have been taken to complete the work within the stipulated period, Dr. Kumar said.

Speaking about the benefits of the project, the officials said underground cabling would improve reliability of power supply, reduce maintenance costs and power interruptions, enhance the city’s aesthetics, minimise tree cutting, improve system capacity, reduce electrical accidents and provide longer service life.
