CWG Day 8 India Wrap: Lovepreet, Seema Win Medals; Neeraj Reaches Javelin Final

India won 2 more medals at CWG 2026: Lovepreet Singh (silver, weightlifting) and Seema Kaliramna (bronze, discus throw). India's tally is now 17 medals, remaining 10th.

India added two more medals on Day 8 of the Commonwealth Games 2026, with weightlifter Lovepreet Singh winning silver and discus thrower Seema Kaliramna claiming bronze to take the country’s tally to 17 medals (3 gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze). India remained 10th in the medal standings, with Australia continuing to dominate the table with 110 medals.

Lovepreet headlined India’s campaign by producing the performance of his career in the men’s +110kg weightlifting event. The 28-year-old Punjab lifter broke the Commonwealth Games snatch record with a 176kg lift and finished with a total of 388kg (176kg+212kg).

He carried a 10kg lead into the clean and jerk, but New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti overturned the deficit with a Games record 223kg lift in his final attempt to snatch gold by just one kilogram. Lovepreet’s silver completed India’s weightlifting campaign with eight medals.

Seema Kaliramna added a bronze in the women’s discus throw after producing a best effort of 58.65m in the third round. The 27-year-old fouled her final three attempts, but her third-round throw was enough to secure a podium finish behind Jamaica’s Samantha Hall (61.66m) and Canada’s Julia Tunks (60.67m).

India also enjoyed a productive day in the field events. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh all qualified for Friday’s men’s javelin throw final despite difficult windy conditions.

In the men’s triple jump, national record holders Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu advanced to the final after finishing second and third respectively in qualifying.

Tejaswin Shankar remained firmly in medal contention in the decathlon. Excelling in his favourite high jump event with a clearance of 2.15m worth 944 points, he ended the day second overall with 4,339 points, just 14 behind Canada’s Damian Warner after five events.

There was disappointment elsewhere in athletics. Asian Games champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor finished fifth in the men’s shot put final, while Samardeep Singh Gill placed seventh.

Sprinters Animesh Kujur (200m) and Vishal TK (400m) failed to progress from their respective semifinals, while Parul Chaudhary finished 13th in the women’s 5000m final.

In lawn bowls, Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar stayed unbeaten after edging Botswana in a tie-break to strengthen their knockout hopes, although Nayanmoni Saikia lost her women’s singles match to Malaysia’s Emma Firyana Saroji.

In cycling, para cyclist Lisha Das and the men’s team sprint trio failed to advance beyond the qualification rounds.
