'Died Gasping For Breath': MP Man Recalls Son's Final Moments After Ambulance Oxygen Runs Out

A 21-year-old dialysis patient allegedly died after the oxygen supply in the ambulance transporting him to a hospital ran out in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandla district. The incident has prompted the health department to order an investigation.

The incident occurred on July 27 in the tribal-dominated district. A video purportedly showing the patient inside the ambulance surfaced on social media on Friday.

The deceased, identified as Ajit Baraiya, was a resident of Sunhera Mal village under the Bamhani police station area. Officials said he had been undergoing regular dialysis treatment at the district hospital.

According to his family, Ajit’s father called an ambulance after his condition worsened. He was first taken to the Bamhani Community Health Centre. The family alleged that despite experiencing breathing difficulties, he was not provided oxygen during this initial phase of treatment.

Doctors later referred him to the district hospital, where he was placed on oxygen support before being shifted. However, his relatives claimed the ambulance’s oxygen supply was exhausted during the journey, and Ajit died before reaching the hospital.

Speaking to local reporters, the deceased man’s distraught father said, “My son died gasping for breath in the ambulance.

The ambulance arrived one hour after we dialled for it, and the oxygen supply ran out 3 km into the journey to the Mandla district hospital, and he died before we could reach there."

Ajit’s father said he believes his son could have survived if oxygen had remained available throughout the journey.

A video that has been widely shared online shows Ajit lying on a stretcher inside the ambulance while his father sits beside him.

Following the allegations, the district health department constituted a probe panel to examine the circumstances surrounding the death.

Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr D J Mohanty said a four-member committee has been tasked with investigating the case.

“The committee has been asked to submit its report at the earliest so that appropriate action can be taken against those found responsible," Mohanty said.
