Ed Harris wanted to quit 'Dutton Ranch' feeling 'underused'

Ed Harris is a four-time Oscar nominee best known for his roles in 'The Truman Show' and 'Apollo 13', establishing himself as one of Hollywood's most respected character actors. The veteran performer has built a career selecting compelling roles across film and television.

However, his recent turn on the 'Yellowstone' spinoff 'Dutton Ranch' proved to be a source of frustration for the 75-year-old actor, who revealed he had considered quitting the series midway through its first season due to concerns about how his character was being utilised.

According to Variety, Ed Harris spoke bluntly about his experience on 'Dutton Ranch' at a red carpet premiere on Monday. The actor was particularly candid about his dissatisfaction with his role, telling production, "I'm feeling underused and inconsequential."

Harris recalled telling his team, "Get me out of here," expressing the depth of his frustration with the series. Harris, who was promoting his sports comedy film 'The Dink,' plays veterinarian Dr Everett McKinney and stars opposite 'Yellowstone' alumni Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser on the series, which debuted in May on the streaming platform.

Ed Harris felt "misled" about his character's role in 'Dutton Ranch'

The actor said he did not "feel he was being used" in the series and "felt a little bit misled" about the scope of his involvement.

Before filming Season 1, Harris spoke with the creative team about the series and his character's role, and they informed him he would be a main character. "That really wasn't the case," he said, recalling his disappointment with how the reality differed from what had been promised during pre-production discussions.

Harris alleged that the 'Dutton Ranch' team left a scene of his character singing on the cutting room floor, a decision that particularly bothered him.

"That really pissed me off," he said about the deleted sequence. His complaint highlighted the gap between what he felt had been promised and what actually materialised on screen during the season.

Production promises more substance for Ed Harris in Season 2

However, production has since reassured Harris that he will have more substantial material to work with in Season 2. The series was renewed in June, and Season 2 begins filming in February. Harris described his 'Dutton Ranch' experience as "a little frustrating" overall, noting that his character's importance on screen did not match what he felt was promised behind the scenes during development.

He expressed hope that the promises made for Season 2 would materialise into a more fulfilling role for the veteran actor.

About 'Dutton Ranch' and its connection to 'Yellowstone'

'Dutton Ranch' follows Beth Dutton, played by Reilly, and Rip Wheeler, played by Hauser, as they relocate from Montana to South Texas to build a new life. The series begins approximately one year after the events that concluded 'Yellowstone' in December 2024.
