The political landscape of Tamil Nadu has been fundamentally reshaped in the aftermath of the 2026 assembly elections. Following the historic victory of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, a dramatic schism within the AIADMK has shifted the focus from a simple transition of power to a total realignment of the opposition. On Tuesday, senior AIADMK leaders SP Velumani and CV Shanmugam led a faction of approximately 30 MLAs in a bid to formalise their support for the TVK government, just 24 hours before a crucial floor test scheduled for Wednesday.

Why have the rebels turned against Edappadi K Palaniswami?

The immediate catalyst for the rebellion is a crisis of confidence in the leadership of Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS). After the AIADMK’s seat tally plummeted to 47 in the 234-member house—costing the party its status as the principal opposition—senior satraps have blamed EPS for the party’s electoral “humiliation".

However, the most explosive allegation comes from former Law Minister CV Shanmugam, who claimed that EPS was secretly negotiating with the MK Salin-led DMK to secure a “backdoor" entry to power. By framing their support for Vijay as a preemptive strike against a “DMK-AIADMK nexus", the rebels are attempting to position themselves as the true custodians of the party’s founding anti-DMK ideology.

How does this ‘Anti-DMK’ paradox work?

The paradox lies in the fact that to fight the DMK, these AIADMK leaders believe they must support a new rival—the TVK. For decades, the AIADMK’s survival has been predicated on its role as the primary alternative to the DMK. The rebels argue that under EPS, the party has become electorally stagnant.

By backing Vijay, they are betting on a new “secular and social justice" model that they believe has a better chance of keeping the DMK out of power in the long run. To them, supporting a newcomer like Vijay is a “calculated sacrifice" to prevent the DMK from reclaiming the political vacuum left by a weakened AIADMK.

What is the significance of the Kongu-Northern nexus?

The geography of the rebellion is particularly damaging for the official AIADMK camp. SP Velumani is the undisputed strongman of the Kongu (Western) belt, while CV Shanmugam holds significant sway in the Northern districts. These two regions have traditionally been the bedrock of AIADMK’s electoral strength.

By potentially carrying 30 MLAs from these regions into the TVK camp, the rebels have effectively decapitated the party’s regional strongholds. This “super-majority" of rebels—well over the two-thirds requirement of 32 to avoid the Anti-Defection Law if a few more join—suggests that the AIADMK is facing its most significant existential threat since the post-Jayalalithaa split in 2017.

What happens during the floor test on May 13?

With the support of 30 AIADMK rebels and the existing backing of the Congress, Left, and VCK, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s government could now pass the floor test with a “super-majority" exceeding 150 votes. This would be a massive jump from his initial majority of 121.

The only remaining hurdle is a legal one: the Madras High Court has restrained one TVK MLA from voting due to a one-vote victory dispute in Tirupattur. However, with the influx of the AIADMK rebel faction, the outcome of the trust vote would no longer be in doubt. The session on Wednesday will serve as the formal coronation of a new political era, one where the traditional Dravidian duopoly has been replaced by a TVK-led coalition built on the ruins of its predecessors.
