Enemy Psyops? Army Detects Misinformation Using Fake Voices, Uniformed Men In Delhi Protest Videos

The Indian Army has detected what officials describe as a coordinated online influence campaign using videos of people in Army uniforms to project support for the ongoing Delhi protests, raising concerns within the government over a possible foreign-backed psychological operation (psyops) aimed at misleading the public.

According to an exclusive internal assessment accessed by CNN-News18, the Army carried out a scan of the online information ecosystem after multiple videos surfaced on social media purportedly showing Army personnel criticising the Government of India and expressing solidarity with protesters. The Army’s preliminary assessment identified a total of 24 such posts featuring individuals in Army dress.

Officials said that after verification, three individuals have been confirmed to be serving Army personnel, while one has been identified as an ex-serviceman (ESM).

Sources said disciplinary proceedings have already been initiated against the three serving personnel in accordance with military regulations.

However, officials stressed that these constitute only a handful of genuine cases and should not be viewed as representative of the Indian Army.

The remaining videos remain under investigation. According to the assessment, most of the individuals appearing in these posts are difficult to identify because the footage lacks distinguishable features, name tags or other identifying markers that would help establish their identity. “We are trying to identify them using all available means," sources familiar with the exercise said.

The assessment has also raised concerns that several of the viral clips may have been manipulated. Officials said many of the videos currently circulating on social media appear to contain fake or misleading voice-overs, creating the impression that uniformed personnel are making political statements or endorsing the protests.

As an immediate countermeasure, these posts are being publicly flagged and commented upon as carrying fabricated audio wherever such manipulation has been detected. The Army has also prepared and circulated multiple fact-check videos to counter misinformation and prevent further spread of misleading content.

Government sources said the broader concern extends beyond individual instances of indiscipline. The pattern of coordinated amplification has triggered fears that hostile foreign actors may be attempting to exploit the Army’s image to undermine public confidence in state institutions and deepen domestic political divisions.

Officials view such campaigns as a classic information warfare tactic, where the credibility and public trust enjoyed by the armed forces are leveraged to lend authenticity to misleading narratives.

The investigation into the remaining accounts and videos is continuing, with agencies working to establish the identities of those involved and determine whether any organised network is behind the coordinated dissemination of the content.
