Tata Sons board meeting: The board meeting of Tata Sons, scheduled for today, February 24, will be a crucial one as it will consider a proposal that would extend the tenure of Chairman N Chandrasekaran for a third five-year term starting in 2027.
In an EXCLUSIVE details shared in an ET NOW video, journalist Anurag Joshi said that board of Tata Sons will be meeting today to consider approval of N Chandrasekaran’s third term as Chairman, after the Tata Trusts board cleared his extension in October last year.
Chandrasekaran’s Current Tenure
Chandrasekaran’s current tenure concludes in February 2027. He was first appointed the chairman of Tata Sons in early 2017. In February 2022, the board unanimously reappointed Chandrasekaran as Chairman for a second term.
The scheduled board meeting will also likely review the financial and operational performance of group firms.
There were efforts to consider the induction of chairman Noel Tata's son, Neville Tata, as a trustee of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) and a board meeting was scheduled for the purpose last month.
However, the SRTT cancelled the board meeting. In contrast, board meetings of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) and Tata Education and Development Trust (TEDT) proceeded as scheduled.
The cancellation suggests that Neville's appointment may have been pushed back to give trustees more time for discussions - since appointing a trustee requires unanimous approval. No new date for the SRTT meeting has been notified yet.
Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT), Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), and Tata Education and Development Trust (TEDT) have several trustees in common. Except for Jehangir HC Jehangir and Jimmy Tata, the other SRTT trustees — Noel, Venu Srinivasan, Vijay Singh and Darius Khambata — also serve on SDTT’s board and participated in the meeting last month.

Noel Tata largest Tata family stakeholder
According to a TOI report, published in December 2025, former Tata Group director Simone Tata had transferred ownership of her assets, including shares of Tata Sons, to her son and Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata, said people with knowledge of the matter.
The decision was reportedly taken some years ago. With the transfer of the ownership of the assets, Noel’s stake in Tata Sons increased to 1 per cent, making him the largest Tata family shareholder in the holding company of the $180-billion Tata Group. He holds 4,058 Tata Sons shares, up from 2,055 shares.
Ratan Tata, Noel’s late half-brother, had held 3,368 Tata Sons shares, equivalent to a 0.83 per cent stake, which he gave to his foundations, Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and Ratan Tata Endowment Trust (RTET), in a 70:30 ratio.
Another half-brother, Jimmy Tata, owns 3,262 Tata Sons shares, representing a 0.81 per cent stake. Other members of the extended Tata family, including Piloo Tata, wife of late Minocher Tata (a grandnephew of Tata Group founder Jamsetji Tata), and their children Jimmy Tata (chief credit officer at HDFC Bank) and Vera Choksey, collectively hold 801 shares in Tata Sons.
The shares held by Simone, Noel, Ratan, and Jimmy were inherited from Naval Tata. Ratan and Jimmy were his children from his first marriage to Soonoo Commisariat, while Noel was his third son from his second marriage to Simone.
