The government's fact-checking unit urged people not to believe misleading social media posts claiming that a girl died during the ongoing protests in Delhi

Amid the ongoing protests in Delhi, a claim circulating widely on social media alleging that a girl died on the spot during the demonstrations has been dismissed as fake by the Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit.

In a post on X, PIB Fact Check said several social media accounts were sharing the claim that a girl had died during the protests in the national capital. Rejecting the claim, the government agency stated that “No protest-related death has occurred in Delhi." It urged the public to stay vigilant, avoid forwarding unverified information, and report suspicious content to the PIB Fact Check team.

The clarification comes at a time when Delhi continues to witness protests, with demonstrators gathering at locations including Jantar Mantar over various demands. The ongoing agitation has sparked heavy political debate, meetings between government leaders and protest representatives, and widespread discussion online. Alongside the protests, several misleading posts and unverified videos have also surfaced on social media, prompting repeated fact-checks from authorities.

The PIB’s post has also triggered reactions online. Many users demanded action against social media accounts allegedly spreading misinformation.

One user commented, “FIRs on those accounts. This is no longer a protest."

Another wrote, “What’s the point of this fact check? Take action against the Instagram accounts who are spreading the fake propaganda."

A third user urged authorities to investigate content creators, saying, “Please look into Instagram content creators; they are churning this message out at a rapid speed."
