Five teachers of a private school in Odisha’s Kendrapara district were arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping a Class 7 girl student for over a year.

The incident came to light last month when the 13-year-old survivor shared her ordeal with her mother, prompting the family to file a complaint with the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on February 18. The accused are scheduled to be produced in court on Sunday.

Following the complaint, CWC members visited the school the next day to investigate and described the case as “highly sensitive." The arrests were made after the father of the minor girl and the CWC lodged separate complaints at the Rajkanika police station, alleging that the accused teachers had raped the minor.

“A complaint was lodged on February 18. After a 48-hour-long investigation, we referred the case to the police for legal action," CWC member Swagatika Patra told news agency PTI. The panel also directed the district education officer to carry out a separate investigation into the allegation, she said.

“Based on the two complaints, the statement of the girl was recorded in accordance with legal provisions. The accused persons and the victim have undergone medical examinations. The accused teachers were arrested on the basis of the preliminary investigation," Rajkanika police station inspector-in-charge Sanjay Mallick said.

Meanwhile, Opposition BJD has submitted a memorandum to the Kendrapara SP, demanding stringent punishment for the culprits.

Further, a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered. Further investigation is underway.
