Tech giant Google on Tuesday announced a $15-billion investment over 2026–2030 to set up India’s first artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with Adani Group and Bharti Airtel.

The project, being developed with AdaniConneX and Airtel, will feature a 1-gigawatt (1GW) data centre campus, new large-scale energy sources, and an expanded fibre-optic and subsea network. This will position Visakhapatnam as an AI and connectivity hub that not only serves India but also the global markets.

It will be Google’s largest AI hub outside the US, built with the same infrastructure that powers Search, YouTube and Workspace.

Global Link

Announcing the project at Bharat AI Shakti, a prelude to the India-AI Impact Summit scheduled for February 2026. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, said he had discussed the plan with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “This hub combines gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure. It will accelerate AI innovation and growth across the country,” Pichai said in a post on X.

Google’s AI hub investment includes the construction of a new international subsea gateway, including multiple international subsea cables landing in Visakhapatnam — linking to Google’s more than two million miles of existing terrestrial and subsea cables worldwide. This will transform Visakhapatnam into an AI and connectivity hub that not only serves India but the rest of the world.

Growth Catalyst

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the investment, calling it “a powerful force in democratising technology” that aligns with India’s Viksit Bharat vision. “It will deliver cutting-edge tools to citizens, boost the digital economy, and secure India’s place as a global technology leader,” he said.

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said the Visakhapatnam facility would house TPU- and GPU-based compute systems for deep learning and neural network training, enabling AI applications across healthcare, agriculture, logistics and finance. “We are honoured to build the engine to power India’s AI revolution,” he added.

An analysis commissioned by Google estimates that the hub will contribute $15 billion to the US GDP over five years through enhanced AI and cloud activities involving American talent and technology.

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project would form part of India’s National AI Mission, helping reskill youth and equip start-ups with advanced AI infrastructure. “AI is transforming every sector. Like India’s success in IT, we must now lead in AI,” he said.

The subsea gateway — bringing multiple international cables to Visakhapatnam — will connect to Google’s global network of over two million miles of terrestrial and subsea cables, strengthening India’s digital backbone and improving route diversity beyond Mumbai and Chennai.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said the project would make Visakhapatnam a global AI and connectivity hub. “Apart from jobs, this will transform sectors from education and healthcare to agriculture,” he said.
