Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, on Friday appealed to people not to criticise him for ending his 26-day hunger strike, urging them to show compassion instead of making political judgments.

In a post on X, Angmo wrote, “Before you rush to criticise @Wangchuk66, first pause to earn the ethos of fasting for 26 days for a cause larger than yourself."

She said Wangchuk is in the ICU after losing 11 kg, including muscle mass, during the fast. “He lies in the ICU today, having lost 11 kg, including muscle mass, because he chose sacrifice over comfort. The least we can offer him is a day of compassion before burdening him with our own expectations and political calculations," she wrote.

Appealing for empathy, Angmo added, “Not everyone is qualified to judge a life of selfless service. One must first earn the moral stature to do so. Please..Have a heart."

Her remarks came a day after Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike following discussions between the Centre and representatives of the protest movement. He is currently recovering in the ICU at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, where his condition is reported to be stable and under close medical monitoring.

Meanwhile, Wangchuk, in a post on X, said his decision to end his indefinite fast was taken in view of the “possible violence in the country". He also said that the decision followed the government’s written assurance and that of 65 opposition MPs that the issue of accountability in the failing examination system will be discussed in Parliament.

‘Do I Need Character Certificate’

Responding to criticism over ending his 26-day hunger strike in support of students protesting the alleged NEET paper leak, Sonam Wangchuk on Friday rejected claims that he had reached any agreement with the government. In a video message shared on X, he said there was no reason for him to prove the sincerity of his protest.

Sharing the video, Wangchuk wrote, “AFTER 26 DAYS OF HUNGER DO I NEED TO PROVE MY SINCERITY!!!" He also urged people to watch the full 22-minute video on his YouTube channel.

In the video, Wangchuk questioned why his decision to call off the fast had led to speculation about political influence. “Do I need a character certificate to prove that my hunger strike was genuine? Since I have ended it, people are asking whose influence led me to do so. Why did I end my fast through these ministers and not others? What deal was made? Do I really have to answer all these questions?" he said.
