India AI Impact Summit 2026

Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said artificial intelligence will inevitably reshape the labour market, warning that while some jobs will be lost, many will be redesigned, as he outlined the government’s role in managing the transition.

Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Sunak said, "AI was made a focus of this summit, and India is taking the lead in demonstrating that impact. That is why I think there is an enormous amount of positivity in many parts of the world around this story."

Some jobs will be lost

Talking about the impact of AI, Sunak said, "the flip side, as you said, is the anxiety that many in the West feel, much of which is centred around jobs. We have to be clear that AI is going to change the labour market. Some jobs will go, but many more will be redesigned. History shows that societies thrive when these transitions are managed well."

Role of government

Highlighting the role of government on the concerns related to AI, Sunak stated that the role of government is not to stop innovation, but to support people in taking on new tasks and new roles with confidence and security.

"That is the task for policymakers -- how to redesign education systems, how to upskill the existing workforce and how to embed digital literacy across the population. We have colleagues here from the UAE who are taking the lead, particularly in this area. That, I believe, is the challenge. Policymakers need to provide reassurance to citizens that the transition will be managed well, so that public anxiety is reduced," he added.
