Indian Coast Guard Rescues 170 During Massive Flood Relief Operations In Gujarat, Dadra & Nagar Haveli

Battling torrential rain, flooded landscapes, and near-impossible flying conditions, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has rescued 170 people during extensive flood relief operations across South Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu over the past three days.

The rescue mission, led by the Indian Coast Guard Air Station (ICGAS) Daman, began after relentless rainfall triggered widespread flooding from the night of July 22. Working in close coordination with the civil administration, state disaster response agencies, and local authorities, Coast Guard teams launched round-the-clock humanitarian assistance and search-and-rescue operations in some of the worst-hit areas.

The operations combined helicopter sorties with ground-based disaster relief teams to reach marooned residents in villages, industrial zones, and riverside settlements cut off by floodwaters. Strong currents, submerged roads, poor visibility and adverse weather posed major challenges, but rescue teams continued operations without interruption.

Among the earliest missions, a disaster relief team rescued five people stranded in Khanvel, Silvassa, during a midnight operation after water levels rose rapidly. Three fishermen trapped near the flooded Kadaiya coast were also brought to safety.

One of the largest ground rescue missions took place at the Welspun industrial area, where 60 people trapped after road access was completely severed were safely evacuated during overnight operations. Seven more people stranded inside a bus submerged in floodwaters near Aero Fibre Pvt Ltd were rescued, while another 10 isolated residents were evacuated from Dongri.

An Indian Coast Guard helicopter also carried out a difficult rescue operation in the Valsad-Pardi region, airlifting four stranded persons despite poor weather conditions. Eight more people were rescued from the Reliance Industries area during a late-night operation.

In another critical mission, rescue teams evacuated 10 people from the Avadh Society area, including a nine-month pregnant woman and a woman suffering from respiratory distress who required urgent medical attention.

The largest helicopter operation was conducted at Mendar village in Navsari district, where two Coast Guard Chetak helicopters airlifted 63 stranded residents to safety. The rescued group included a person experiencing severe chest pain who was immediately evacuated for medical treatment.

The Coast Guard said its personnel continued operating despite strong winds, reduced visibility, and fast-flowing floodwaters, highlighting the force’s preparedness and rapid response capability during natural disasters. Authorities said Coast Guard assets remain on high alert as the flood situation continues to evolve, with rescue teams ready to respond to any further emergencies.
