IPL's investment frenzy continues! Singapore's Temasek exploring ‘right opportunity’ in cricket's biggest league
Temasek, a state-owned investment firm from Singapore, is exploring opportunities to invest in the Indian Premier League. Vishesh Shrivastav, Managing Director of the company's India region, has confirmed the firm's interest in the league, although he did not reveal which franchise he's eyeing.
"IPL is a marquee property, and we remain interested in it," Shrivastav said, as quoted by Reuters.
"For the right opportunity, we would jump on it," he added.
Given the continuous rise in its popularity, IPL has increasingly become a preferred investment destination for sovereign wealth funds, private equity firms and billionaire investors, driven by strong media rights deals and rising franchise revenues that have significantly boosted team valuations.
One of the biggest IPL transactions this year came in March when United Spirits, the Indian arm of Diageo, agreed to sell Royal Challengers Bengaluru at a valuation of $1.8 billion to a consortium that included David Blitzer's Bolt Ventures and Blackstone.
According to US-based investment bank Houlihan Lokey, the IPL's overall valuation crossed $18.5 billion last year.
Temasek has also expanded its investments in India over the past decade, with its portfolio in the country growing more than four times to $42 billion. The firm continues to focus on sectors such as financial services, consumer businesses and healthcare, with investments in companies including Haldiram's and Manipal Hospitals.
