The controversy surrounding the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg deepened on Monday evening after a purported post-mortem report surfaced on social media, despite official assurances that the document would remain confidential. The so-called “secret" report, which began circulating across WhatsApp and X (formerly Twitter) on October 14, 2025, went viral within hours, triggering public speculation and outrage.
Authorities, however, have categorically dismissed the document as fake, warning of strict legal consequences for spreading misinformation. “The document lacks a doctor’s signature, which is mandatory for any valid post-mortem report. Therefore, it is not authentic," stated the Head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), who also serves as SDGP, Assam Police. He further confirmed that a detailed investigation had been launched to trace the origin of the forged report.
The SIT chief urged citizens to refrain from forwarding or believing unverified content. “Spreading fake news is a punishable offence. Stern action will be taken against those responsible for circulating such fabricated material," he cautioned. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier emphasised that the autopsy findings would remain confidential until the investigation concluded, to preserve the case’s integrity.
Meanwhile, in a parallel development, the five prime accused in Zubeen Garg’s death case were remanded to judicial custody after completing their 14-day police custody on October 14. The accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandipan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya — were presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) on the morning of October 15.
Confirming the development, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Munna Prasad Gupta, who heads the SIT, stated that the police had chosen not to seek an extension of their custody. During the hearing, the accused appealed to the court not to be sent to Guwahati Central Jail, citing safety concerns.
Taking note of their plea, the court directed that they be kept in a secure correctional facility. In accordance with this directive, all five have been transferred to the newly built Baksa District Jail, located around 80 km from Guwahati. The high-security facility, inaugurated by Chief Minister Sarma in June 2025, was yet to house any inmates, making it an ideal location for their detention.
Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation into the singer’s death to proceed without interference.
