Maharashtra Cyber Police Probes Fake AI Videos Of PM Modi, Piyush Goyal

Maharashtra Cyber police is probing AI-doctored videos of Piyush Goyal and Narendra Modi, amid student protests demanding Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over exam paper leaks.

The Maharashtra Cyber Department has registered a case and launched an investigation into the circulation of allegedly doctored videos on social media, said to feature Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the FIR, the complainant, an active user of Facebook, Instagram, and X, regularly tracks political and social developments online. On July 25, at around 10:00 am, the complainant came across a video posted by a Facebook account named “Maharashtra Dharma," which appeared to show Goyal making controversial and inflammatory remarks.

The video initially seemed authentic.

However, after verifying the clip, the complainant found the original footage of the same event on the official social media handle of a news agency. A comparison between the two versions raised suspicions that the viral video had been digitally altered and morphed using AI tools.

In the doctored video, Minister Piyush Goyal is heard saying, “these cockroaches should be hanged in public."

The probe comes at a time of heightened political sensitivity, with student protests intensifying across parts of the country over repeated examination paper leaks. Demonstrators had demanded accountability and called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging systemic failures in safeguarding major competitive exams.

Investigators are now examining whether the manipulated videos were created and circulated to exploit the ongoing unrest and influence public perception. Authorities have flagged growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence to fabricate realistic but misleading political content, particularly during periods of public agitation.

Already there is a debate raging on in the country about the profane language that the student protesters were seen using against the Prime Minister and the government during their agitation. Several students have also been booked for these comments and slogans.

Leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party, Saurav Das and Abhijeet Dipke, have condemned the use of bad language against constitutional functionaries but also said that the state’s action against them is unwarranted.
