The Maharashtra government has decided not to organise any major state functions for the next six months following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to reduce unnecessary expenditure and fuel consumption.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that a government event scheduled in Satara on Friday will go ahead as planned because preparations for the programme have already been completed.

“After tomorrow’s state government function in Satara, no big function will be planned for the next six months by the state government. We had already planned tomorrow’s event, and preparations have been done; hence, we are not cancelling that," the leader said.

The decision comes shortly after PM Modi urged governments, organisations and citizens to adopt measures aimed at reducing fuel usage and avoiding wasteful spending amid global economic and energy uncertainties.

State officials indicated that the move is part of a broader effort to cut logistical expenses, reduce large-scale travel and promote more efficient governance practices.

The Satara event is expected to be the final major state-sponsored public programme before the temporary pause on large government functions comes into effect.

The development also follows similar steps by several organisations and companies that have recently announced fuel-saving and cost-cutting measures, including expanded work-from-home policies and reduced event spending.
