Meet Tarun Garg : Hyundai Motor India Limited ( HMIL ) today, October 15, announced the appointment of Tarun Garg as the next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company, subject to approval of shareholders , effective January 01, 2026. This marks a significant milestone, as Garg becomes the first Indian national to take on this leadership role within HMIL, since the company’s establishment 29 years ago.

At present, Tarun Garg serves as the Whole-time Director & COO of HMIL. Following a smooth transition, the incumbent Managing Director, Unsoo Kim, will return to a strategic role at Hyundai Motor Company (HMC), South Korea.

Upon his elevation, Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director & COO, HMIL, expressed, “I am deeply honoured by the trust and confidence placed in me by Hyundai Motor Group.

Commenting on this announcement, José Muñoz, President & CEO of HMC, said, “Tarun’s appointment as the first Indian national to lead HMIL is a defining moment in our nearly three-decade history.

Speaking on this elevation, Unsoo Kim, Managing Director, HMIL, stated, I hold the utmost confidence in Tarun’s exceptional intellect and foresight, and I am confident that under his stewardship, HMIL will continue to ascend to even greater heights.”

Who is Tarun Garg?

Currently, Tarun Garg is a Whole-time Director & COO of Hyundai Motor India . He has over 20 years of experience in the automobile sector. He joined Hyundai in 2007 and has steadily grown, effectively managing sales, branding, and dealerships. Before Hyundai, he worked at Maruti Suzuki, where he gained a deep understanding of the industry.

Today, under Tarun Garg's leadership, Hyundai remains India 's second-largest car company. During his tenure, popular vehicles like the Creta, Venue, and i20 were launched. He also promoted electric vehicles like the Kona and Ioniq 5. In addition, new services like the "Hyundai Promise" and subscriptions for used cars were also introduced.

Tarun Garg holds an engineering degree from Delhi Technological University (DTU) and an MBA from IIM Lucknow. He has over 20 years of experience in sales, marketing, and operations in the Indian auto industry. Prior to Hyundai, he worked for several years at Maruti Suzuki, where he held senior positions in key departments such as logistics, sales, and marketing, ultimately becoming Executive Director of Marketing, Logistics, Parts, and Accessories.
