The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is conducting raids in Central and South Kashmir in connection with alleged attempts to revive Jamaat-e-Islami to push for separatism in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources told CNN-News18 that several locations — including the Lal Nazar area of Srinagar and Shopian in South Kashmir — were raided by the central agency.
‘Unlawful Association’
In February 2024, the central government had declared ‘Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu Kashmir’ an “unlawful association" for a further period of five years under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), 1967.
Founded in 1941, Jamaat-e-Islami is said to be involved in fomenting terrorism and anti-India propaganda for fueling secessionism in Jammu and Kashmir.
Announcing a ban on the outfit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the move was in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “zero-tolerance" policy against terrorism and separatism.
“The organisation is found continuing its activities against the security, integrity and sovereignty of the nation. Anyone threatening the security of the nation will face ruthless measures", Shah had said.
Previously, a ban on ‘Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu Kashmir’ in February 2019, months before the abolishment of the Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir.
