No evidence against Sanjeev Mukhiya in NEET-UG 2024 case: CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday (July 23, 2026) said it did not find any evidence establishing the complicity of Sanjeev Kumar alias Sanjeev Mukhiya in the NEET-UG 2024 case. He is an accused in certain other cases being investigated by the Bihar police.

In 2024, the State police had detected the paper theft and registered a case. Prima facie suspicion had emerged at that stage against Sanjeev Mukhiya, suggesting his role, as he was found involved in certain other examination paper theft/leak cases, said the agency.

“He was accordingly named as an accused in the said FIR by the Bihar police. The case was subsequently transferred to the CBI for investigation,” it said.

The CBI said that during its investigation, each person involved in the theft and onward distribution of the stolen NEET-UG 2024 question paper were identified, as also each candidate who benefited from its use. “Multiple chargesheets have accordingly been filed by the CBI against 45 persons before the jurisdictional court in Patna,” said the agency.

“Sanjeev Mukhiya had remained absconding during the relevant time. He was subsequently arrested by the Bihar police in connection with those other cases. Since he was a named accused in the FIR in the NEET-UG 2024 case as well, the CBI took his police custody for the purpose of examination...,” it said.

As no evidence of his involvement in the NEET-UG case emerged, the CBI did not file any chargesheet against him. He accordingly availed bail in that case. “Sanjeev Mukhiya remained in judicial custody after his bail in the CBI’s case, he being an accused in certain other cases being investigated by the Bihar police,” said the CBI.

“This issue was clarified in the year 2024 itself adequately. The narrative going around now about his deliberate omission is factually incorrect,” it added.
