A procedural lapse in the postmortem examination in the death case of 31-year-old Twisha Sharma in Bhopal has now come under scrutiny, as the investigation into her alleged suicide and dowry harassment continues.

According to the fresh details surfaced, the ligature material, which is the strap allegedly used for hanging, was not provided to doctors at the time of the postmortem examination, despite it being a mandatory part of the forensic procedure.

Officials said that, as per protocol, the police are required to submit the material used in the hanging along with the body so that forensic experts can compare the neck marks with the alleged ligature.

However, the postmortem was conducted and the report issued without this examination being carried out.

Authorities have now sought to rectify the lapse.

The ligature material was handed over to AIIMS Bhopal on Sunday, following which doctors are expected to conduct a fresh examination to match the neck injuries with the material allegedly used in the hanging.

Officials said the ligature report was expected later in the day.

Police stated that the material could not initially be submitted due to “certain reasons".

CASE TRIGGERED MASSIVE ROW

The case pertains to the death of Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, who was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area earlier this week.

According to police, she had married Bhopal-based advocate Samarth Singh in December 2025 after meeting him through a dating app in 2024.

Samarth Singh is the son of a retired sessions judge.

Police said Twisha was found hanging inside her matrimonial home on Tuesday night.

Her husband and mother-in-law reportedly rushed her to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police said they received information about the incident from the hospital around 11 pm.

The woman’s maternal family, however, alleged foul play from the beginning and accused her in-laws of murder.

Officials said no suicide note was recovered from the scene, and the investigation was later handed over to Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajnish Singh.

HUSBAND, MOTHER-IN-LAW BOOKED

Days after her death, Bhopal Police registered an FIR against Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh, a retired district judge, under charges including dowry death and harassment for dowry.

Assistant Police Commissioner Rajneesh Kashyap Kaul confirmed that the FIR was lodged at Katara Hills Police Station following protests by Twisha’s family members and relatives, who had staged demonstrations demanding immediate action.

Twisha’s family alleged that she had been subjected to sustained mental harassment and domestic violence after her marriage.

Her brother, Major Harshit Sharma, claimed that she had spoken to her mother over the phone around 10.05 pm on the night of the incident and described the harassment she was allegedly facing at her matrimonial home.

According to him, the call abruptly disconnected after her husband entered the room.

The family further alleged that repeated calls to Twisha, her husband and her mother-in-law went unanswered for several minutes.

Around 10.15 pm, the family allegedly contacted Giribala Singh and requested her to check on Twisha.

A few minutes later, they were informed that she was “not breathing".

ALLEGATIONS OF HARASSMENT, DOWRY PRESSURE

Twisha’s family has levelled serious allegations against the husband and in-laws, including claims of mental harassment, domestic violence and coercion related to pregnancy termination.

Major Harshit Sharma alleged that Twisha had wanted to continue her pregnancy, but was allegedly pressured by her husband and in-laws to terminate it.

He claimed her character was questioned, and allegations were made regarding the legitimacy of the child.

The family also alleged that she was harassed over dowry and pressured to transfer shares and investments worth nearly Rs 20 lakh, which had been gifted to her by her father, to her husband and in-laws.

POSTMORTEM FINDINGS UNDER SCANNER

According to the short postmortem report, the cause of death was listed as “antemortem hanging by ligature", indicating that Twisha was alive at the time of hanging.

The report also mentioned “multiple antemortem injuries" on different parts of her body.

The findings further noted that the medical termination of pregnancy had been carried out a week before her death.

Police said viscera and blood samples have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for toxicology examination, while nail samples have been preserved for DNA analysis.

Investigators have also seized her clothes and other material from the scene for forensic examination.
