NTPC Ramagundam phase-II crucial to meet Telangana’s power demand: Kishan Reddy

Union Minister for Coal & Mines and senior BJP leader G. Kishan Reddy has written to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, urging the State government to enter into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NTPC for the upcoming 3x800 MW (2400 MW) thermal power project proposed in phase-II at Ramagundam.

In his public letter on Monday, he pointed out that the State’s power demand touched an all-time high of 18,139 MW on March 3, 2026, and that the demand is expected to rise significantly in the coming years. Referring to Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka’s recent statement, Mr. Kishan Reddy said Telangana would require an additional 5,000–6,000 MW of thermal capacity to maintain grid stability and could see power demand reach 1 lakh megawatts by 2047.

He urged the Chief Minister to personally intervene and facilitate a PPA between the Telangana government and NTPC for the phase-II 2400 MW project, stating that such cooperation would significantly strengthen Telangana’s energy security and serve the long-term interests of the public.

The Secunderabad MP recalled that the first phase of the NTPC Ramagundam project — comprising 2×800 MW (1600 MW) and built with advanced ultra supercritical technology at a cost of around ₹12,000 crore — was inaugurated and dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023. He noted that 85% of the power generated from both phase-I and phase-II is earmarked exclusively for Telangana.

Highlighting NTPC’s proven expertise in delivering low-cost, high-efficiency thermal power through advanced technologies, Mr. Kishan Reddy reminded the Chief Minister of his earlier praise for the Ramagundam phase-I project during Assembly discussions.

He said that if NTPC is granted autonomy to source coal for the full 5×800 MW project, it is prepared to supply high-quality electricity at competitive rates, benefiting both the State government and the people of Telangana. The BJP leader also noted that several southern States are already entering into PPAs with NTPC due to the corporation’s ability to generate reliable power at lower costs.
