'Over 152 Paper Leaks In 10 Years': Rahul Gandhi Urges Accountability For Exam Irregularities

Rahul Gandhi said around 7.5 crore students and their families have been affected by the repeated leaks.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday claimed that 152 examination paper leaks had taken place over the past decade without a single conviction, alleging that the repeated breaches had jeopardised the future of lakhs of students. His remarks came amid widespread protests across the country over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination under the banner of the Cockroach Janata Party.

‘152 paper leaks in 10 years’

Claiming that repeated paper leaks have undermined confidence in the education system, Gandhi said at least 152 examination papers had been leaked over the past decade.

“The thing that is very clear to everybody is that our education system, which was once regarded as one of the best in the world, is facing serious challenges," he said.

“What we do know is that 152 paper leaks have taken place over the last decade. If you do the math, that’s roughly one every month. Every month, lakhs of students are told they have to go through the same stress all over again. After that, they are left feeling their concerns are not being addressed," Gandhi said.

According to him, around 7.5 crore students and their families have been affected by the repeated paper leaks.

Even as Rahul Gandhi claimed that there had been “zero convictions" in paper leak cases over the past decade, the CBI’s investigation into the NEET-UG paper leak this year has widened, with the agency saying it has arrested 10 people so far from multiple cities, including Delhi, Jaipur, Gurugram, Nashik, Pune, Latur and Ahilyanagar.

‘Middle-class families paying the price’

Gandhi said the burden of repeated examination irregularities falls largely on ordinary families who invest heavily in their children’s education.

“Around 7.5 crore students and their families are affected. These are middle-class and poor families who invest their hard-earned money in education," he said.

He alleged that despite the scale of the problem, there had been no accountability.

“Yet, in the last 10 years, despite 152 paper leaks, there have been zero convictions. Somebody, or a group of people, is damaging our education system and affecting the future of our students. What does the government do? Zero convictions," Gandhi said.

The Congress leader maintained that students were protesting for a genuine cause and reiterated his allegation that the government was acting against them instead of addressing their concerns.

His remarks came as demonstrations continued in different parts of the country over alleged NEET paper irregularities, with opposition parties stepping up pressure on the Centre over the issue.
