Mumbai Metro Rail pillar collapses

One person died, and three to four others were injured after a section of an under-construction metro pillar collapsed on LBS Road in Mulund, crashing onto a passing autorickshaw, a fire brigade official told PTI.

The incident took place around 12:20 pm on the busy LBS Road, opposite the Johnson & Johnson factory.

“A cement slab from the pillar gave way and crashed onto an autorickshaw passing below, completely crushing the three-wheeler. Three to four persons are feared injured,” the official told PTI.

“Fire brigade and police personnel, as well as staffers of the firm constructing the metro rail route (Line 4), are at the spot to monitor post-incident operations,” the official added.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde said she had just reached the spot and would speak to the local MLA to understand what exactly had happened, calling the incident a case of “huge negligence.” She noted that the parapet body had reportedly been fitted only a day earlier and questioned whether proper safety norms were followed, adding that traffic movement below should have been halted during the work. She confirmed that the injured have been admitted to the hospital and that one person has died.

Further details are awaited, the official added.
