PBKS qualification scenario: Can Punjab Kings still qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs after heartbreaking defeat against Mumbai Indians?

Punjab Kings, who were running amok in the initial phase of the season and were on the verge to become the first team to advance to the playoffs, have slipped to the other side of the pendulum. On Thursday, PBKS suffered their fifth defeat in a row when they lost to the Mumbai Indians by 6 wickets. The loss has put their playoff contention into jeopardy; however, they are still hanging by a thread, which means all hope is not lost yet.

Can PBKS still qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs?

Despite enduring tough losses, there is still a fair likelihood that Punjab will cement their place in the top-4. Having won six and lost five, with one match ending in a no result, PBKS have accumulated 13 points in 12 games. As each team plays 14 games during the league phase, Punjab are left with two more matches and need to fight with all its might to gain four crucial points. Should they win both the remaining matches, they will reach 17 points, which is a qualifying zone.

If they lose one and win one, they will get to 15 points; they will still remain alive in the playoff race, but their destiny will no longer be in their hands. They would have to depend on other teams' results and would have to hope that two of the Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals would falter and not reach 16 points.

If they lose both their remaining matchups, they would remain stationary on 13 points and may not reach the playoffs, as teams like CSK, RR, and SRH can overtake them. Notably, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans have already attained 16 points and will likely finish above Punjab in all three scenarios.
