Maharashtra’s transport department is set to identify dedicated routes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region for the Mahila e-Rickshaw Scheme, aimed at giving women commuters better last-mile connectivity while boosting women’s entrepreneurship and clean-energy transport.

State transport minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed officials to finalise these routes without adding to traffic congestion.

Where Will These E-Rickshaws Run?

Rather than highways, arterial roads or major junctions, the low-speed pink e-rickshaws will largely operate on internal roads, feeder routes and connectivity corridors — the kind of short stretches that link residential areas to railway stations, metro stations and bus depots.

The transport department and traffic police have been asked to jointly map suitable routes across the city’s suburbs, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Vasai-Virar and Kalyan-Dombivli.

How Far Can They Travel, And What Will They Cost To Ride?

Each e-rickshaw offers a range of about 120 km on a single charge, making them well-suited for short, frequent trips within a locality. Fare details for commuters have not yet been announced by the department — we’ll update this once those are finalised.

How Can Women Buy One, And What’s The Cost?

The government’s financial support for the scheme has been raised from 20% to 40% of the vehicle’s cost, with the remaining amount to be covered through a bank loan and the beneficiary’s own contribution. This is expected to make ownership significantly more affordable.

The exact on-road price of the e-rickshaw hasn’t been specified in the official release — worth confirming with the Women and Child Development Department before publishing a figure.

Beneficiaries also get free driving training, help with obtaining a commercial licence, and support for vehicle maintenance.

Who Gets Priority Under The Scheme?

Economically weaker women, widows, divorced women and those from marginalised communities are being prioritised for allotment.

Are They Safe?

All e-rickshaws under the scheme will carry GPS-enabled tracking systems, mandated for effective regulation, along with other safety features suited to urban operation. The transport department is also in talks with manufacturers to improve battery technology, speed and overall efficiency.

The directive was issued at a review meeting at Mantralaya, attended by Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare, transport commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, and senior officials from the transport department, WCD department and RTOs.
