Weekly meetings of the Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Narendra Modi have gone beyond the formal agenda, with ministers encouraged to reflect on key national developments and share positive updates from their respective domains.
Sources said that apart from discussing listed policy matters, the Prime Minister reviews significant events of the past week with his Cabinet colleagues, seeks their feedback, and invites suggestions. In addition, he expects each minister to share some “good news" during the meeting — either related to their ministry’s performance or from their personal lives.
According to sources, ministers often highlight notable achievements of their departments as part of this informal segment. These may include major policy outcomes, administrative successes, or initiatives that have positively impacted citizens. On some occasions, inspiring accounts are shared to motivate fellow Cabinet members. In one such instance, a senior minister reportedly spoke about reviving a loss-making public sector undertaking within months and steering it towards a profit of Rs 100 crore.
Personal milestones have also found mention during these interactions. Last year, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu informed the Prime Minister and Cabinet colleagues that he had been blessed with a baby boy. The whole team burst into laughter and congratulations for the real “good news".
On another occasion, Union Minister CR Patil told the Cabinet about the action taken by his ministry to correct the flaws of Jal Jeevan Mission which was lauded by all.
Ministers from key portfolios such as power, water resources, roads and highways, health, railways, education, and information technology frequently share updates on decisions that have brought tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.
Sources indicate that the Prime Minister’s initiative is aimed at fostering a culture of positive reinforcement within the Cabinet, encouraging ministers to focus on citizen-centric outcomes and set new benchmarks in governance. Typically, this “good news" exchange takes place during the informal segment of the meeting, after the formal agenda has been concluded.
