The increase will impact only new entrants to the BS programme from 2026–27 academic year. Students currently pursuing the course will continue to pay fees as per old structure.

As higher education institutions periodically reassess costs to align with academic and operational needs, fee structures are often revised after long gaps. Such reviews typically affect only new admissions and are accompanied by assurances on financial support for eligible students.
One such revision has now been announced by the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru.
The Indian Institute of Science has decided to significantly increase the tuition fee for its four-year Bachelor of Science programme. The annual fee will be raised from Rs 10,000 to Rs 80,000, marking a steep increase after the fee remained unchanged for more than a decade.
The revised fee structure will come into effect from the 2026–27 academic year and will apply only to students who join the programme from that batch onward. Existing students enrolled in the BS programme will not be affected by the hike.
Why the Fee Has Been Increased
According to institute officials, the decision to revise the fee was taken after internal review and discussions, keeping in mind the rising cost of delivering high-quality education. The BS programme was launched in 2011, and the fee had remained at Rs 10,000 per year since then.
Officials said the revised fee brings IISc’s undergraduate charges closer to those of other leading institutions offering comparable programmes, while helping the institute sustain academic resources, infrastructure and teaching quality.
Who Will Be Affected
The increase will impact only new entrants to the BS programme from the 2026–27 academic year. Students currently pursuing the course will continue to pay fees as per the old structure.
Admissions to the BS programme are highly competitive. Students are selected through national-level entrance examinations such as JEE Advanced and the IISER Aptitude Test. In 2025, IISc admitted around 138 students to the programme, including supernumerary and international candidates.
Support for Students from Weaker Sections
IISc has said that the fee revision will not affect its commitment to inclusivity. Financial assistance and fee support will continue to be available for students from reserved categories and economically weaker sections.
Officials indicated that scholarships, fee waivers and other forms of aid will remain in place to ensure that talented students are not discouraged from applying due to financial constraints.
Possible Changes to Other Programmes
The institute has also indicated that fees for some postgraduate and doctoral programmes may be revised in the future, though details of those changes have not yet been announced.
IISc said further information regarding fee structures and financial support mechanisms will be shared closer to the admission cycle, allowing prospective students to plan accordingly.
