The Supreme Court on Monday extended by one week the deadline for publication of the final electoral roll in West Bengal under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), pushing it beyond the earlier cut-off of February 14.
The court said the final voter list could not be published on February 14, noting that the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) had already written to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) seeking additional time to complete the hearing process. The apex court also directed that the time for hearings be extended.
In its order, the Supreme Court also issued a show-cause notice to the Director General, while observing that in the present situation it would not be possible to publish the final roll within the original deadline.
