Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar said on Friday (May 8, 2026) he has not committed himself to the swearing-in when Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party president C. Joseph Vijay and others told him that Saturday (May 9, 2026) was an auspicious day. Reportedly, he is still firm on numbers, while the Raj Bhavan has not issued any communication on the swearing-in tomorrow.
A writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Friday, submitting that the Tamil Nadu Governor is duty-bound to invite Mr. Vijay , as the leader of the single largest party, was to form the government in the State and later prove the majority on the floor of the House.
With the two Left parties extending unconditional support to Mr. Vijay on Friday, the TVK which went alone in the recently-concluded Assembly election, now has the support of nine more MLAs from the Congress (5), CPI (2) and CPI(M) (2). The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has said they will come out with an announcemnt on Saturday morning.
With a fractured mandate during the Assembly polls in which no party or front secured a majority, TVK won 108 seats (including the second seat won by Vijay). The party now requires the support of two more MLAs to prove a majority support of 118 MLAs.
