The Union Cabinet is likely to take up a proposal to change the name of Kerala to ‘Keralam’, following a resolution passed by the Kerala Assembly seeking to amend the state’s name in official records.

The move is part of the state government’s effort to restore what it describes as the region’s original historical and cultural name.

The proposal comes after the Assembly adopted a resolution urging the Centre to approve the renaming, paving the way for the matter to be placed before the Union government for consideration.

In January this year, Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar had written to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan extending support to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government’s move to rename the state as ‘Keralam’.

Chandrasekhar later thanked the Chief Minister for replying to his letter and shared the response on social media, stating that the name ‘Keralam’ reflects the state’s history, language and roots.

“Restoring it is a step towards honouring our heritage. The BJP and NDA have always stood for protecting Keralam’s traditions, culture and faith," he said.

He further said that some political parties in the state had a long history of violating these values and beliefs.

“For us, ‘Developed Keralam, Safe Keralam and Protection of Faith’ are not just slogans. They are our mission," Chandrasekhar said, adding that whatever is good for Keralam and its people would always have his support.

In his reply letter, Chief Minister Vijayan said the original name of the state was ‘Keralam’ and that it had been altered to ‘Kerala’ during British rule for administrative convenience.

“The changes made by them are being rectified, and the real name is being restored. This is in tune with the culture of the state," Vijayan said in the letter.

The Chief Minister also thanked Chandrasekhar for supporting the steps taken by the state government to protect and strengthen the language and culture of Keralam.

The Kerala Assembly’s resolution seeks to formally change the state’s name in official records, a process that requires approval from the Union government.
