Actor-politician Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor RV Arlekar for the third time in three days on Friday, amid expectations that his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) had secured the numbers required to form the government in the state. However, the deadlock over government formation continued after the Governor reportedly found that TVK was still short of the majority mark.

According to Lok Bhavan sources, Vijay submitted letters of support from 117 MLAs. This included 107 TVK MLAs in the 234-member Assembly. Although TVK won 108 seats, Vijay is expected to vacate one of the two constituencies he won, bringing the party’s effective tally down to 107.

The support letters also included signatures from five Congress MLAs, four Left MLAs and one AMMK MLA. Vijay reportedly sought an 11 am swearing-in ceremony on Saturday.

The situation took a dramatic turn within 30 minutes after AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran contacted the Governor and alleged that the signature of the lone AMMK MLA backing TVK had been forged.

Following the development, TVK leaders reportedly tried to reach AMMK MLA Kamaraj, but he could not be contacted. Shortly afterwards, Kamaraj appeared in Chennai and, along with Dhinakaran, met the Governor. The duo allegedly complained of horse trading by TVK, with the MLA purportedly claiming that the signature submitted in support of Vijay was not his.

Dhinakaran also informed the Governor that the AMMK remained firmly aligned with the NDA.

Amid the controversy, TVK released a video purportedly showing Kamaraj writing a letter extending support to Vijay’s party.

Lok Bhavan sources also said that the VCK, an ally of the DMK, had not submitted any formal letter of support to the Governor. While there were reports claiming the VCK had sent its support through email, sources said no such communication had been received at the Governor’s office.
