American businessman and former professional wrestling promoter Vince McMahon has been captured on police footage from a 100mph crash in Connecticut, dating back to July. The clip reveals that a state trooper was attempting to catch up to McMahon to pull him over at the time.
McMahon, now 80, was behind the wheel of his 2024 Bentley Continental GT on the Merritt Parkway in Westport on July 24, the same day wrestling icon Hulk Hogan passed away of a heart attack in Florida.
As per state police, the luxury car, valued at over $300,000 (Rs 2.72 crore), was travelling at 100 mph (160 kph) or more.
“Why were you driving all over 100 mph?" state police Detective Maxwell Robins asked McMahon after the crash, as per police bodycam video.
“I got my granddaughter’s birthday," the veteran businessman replied.
Dashcam footage captured by Robins shows McMahon closing in on a BMW in the same lane, braking and veering left at the last moment. The Bentley struck the rear of the other vehicle, then slammed into the left-side guardrail and ricocheted back onto the highway, sending up a cloud of dust and debris.
Police confirmed that no one was injured in the crash. In addition to damage to the rear of the BMW, a separate vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on the parkway was hit by debris from the collision.
McMahon was cited for reckless driving and following too closely. In October, a state judge permitted him to enter a pretrial probation program that will see the charges dismissed next October if he completes it.
McMahon was also directed to make a $1,000 (Rs 90000) charitable donation.
State police said that Robins was attempting to catch up with the veteran businessman on the parkway to record his speed before initiating a traffic stop. Authorities clarified that the situation didn’t constitute a pursuit, which involves officers chasing a suspect attempting to flee and added that there was no indication McMahon was trying to evade the trooper.
