Manchester United are staring at a financial shock worth over Rs. 200 crore for parting ways with manager Ruben Amorim earlier this year, with the club’s latest financial disclosures revealing the potential scale of the payout.
Amorim’s turbulent 14-month spell at Old Trafford came to an end on January 5. The Portuguese coach exited along with five members of his coaching staff, bringing an abrupt close to a period marked by inconsistency on the pitch and unprecedented tension behind the scenes.
In a filing to the New York Stock Exchange, United described the development as an ‘event that occurred after the reporting period.’ The club confirmed that a £6.3 million charge (approximately ₹67.67 crore) would be recorded for the write-off of related intangible assets.
Additionally, a provision of £15.9 million (approximately ₹170.78 crore), representing the maximum possible future settlement payable to Amorim and his staff, will be recognised in the financial results for the year ending June 30, 2026. It seems the final amount may depend on certain conditions, including whether Amorim secures a new managerial position within a stipulated timeframe.
The accounts further show that United have paid Sporting CP £6.3 million (approximately ₹67.67 crore), the remaining compensation owed for hiring Amorim. Earlier disclosures had confirmed a £10 million payment (approximately ₹107.41 crore) to Sporting to appoint him as successor to Erik ten Hag, whose own departure cost £10.4 million (approximately ₹111.71 crore).
In total, United’s expenditure linked to Amorim’s arrival and exit could climb to £37.3 million — roughly ₹400.64 crore.
Amorim won 25 of his 63 matches in charge, overseeing one of the club’s most disappointing league campaigns in decades. The only saving grace of his time in Carrington would be the players signed under his reign, especially Bryan Mbuemo, Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha have made the team better.
Under interim boss Michael Carrick, United have climbed to fourth place after a strong unbeaten run, reviving hopes of securing Champions League football next season. He has been helped by the fact that United’s lavish squad is only competing in the Premier League, playing one match/week, but the overall aggressive style of play has come as a sigh of relief for the fans.
