A major pipeline burst in Mumbai’s Bandra Reclamation sent water 50 feet high, flooding roads and snarling traffic, days before scheduled water cuts in several suburbs

On Monday afternoon, commuters passing through Bandra Reclamation in Mumbai were stunned when a major 900-mm water pipeline burst near the Mahim Causeway. The rupture was so powerful that water gushed nearly 50 feet into the air, creating what many described as a ‘water volcano’ on the road.

The incident occurred on February 9 at approximately 1:35 pm. According to officials, the pipeline was damaged during excavation work in the area. Due to extremely high water pressure, the northbound carriageway was completely flooded, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Millions of litres of treated drinking water were lost as it streamed across the area.

Videos Go Viral As Repairs Begin

Videos showing towering jets of water shooting into the air have gone viral on social media. Soon after the incident, teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reached the spot and began emergency repair work to control the damage.

The pipeline burst comes at a particularly difficult time, as the BMC has already announced water supply disruptions in several parts of Mumbai. From February 12 to 13, water supply will be completely shut or reduced in Bandra, Khar, and Santacruz between 10 am and midnight, a total of 14 hours.

Adding to the problem, another pipeline near Qureshi Nagar is also being shut down for repair work.

Advisory Issued Over Water Safety

Due to the burst pipeline and ongoing repair operations, authorities have warned of possible water contamination. Minister Ashish Shelar and the BMC have urged residents to use water sparingly.

Even after normal supply resumes, citizens have been advised to filter and boil water for the next four to five days as a precaution.
