Arsenal are stepping up their pursuit of Bruno Guimarães after missing out on multiple midfield targets, but Newcastle have no intention of selling their captain.

Arsenal are preparing to intensify their pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães, with the Brazil international emerging as Mikel Arteta’s top midfield target ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Gunners have explored several midfield options during the summer transfer window but now appear ready to focus their efforts on the Newcastle star.

Guimarães Moves To The Top Of Arsenal’s Wishlist

Arteta has made strengthening his midfield a priority and Arsenal have spent recent months assessing a number of candidates, including Mateus Fernandes and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.

However, Fernandes has since completed a move to Tottenham Hotspur, while Bournemouth remain adamant that Scott will not be sold this summer despite ongoing transfer interest.

That has pushed Guimarães back to the top of Arsenal’s shortlist. The Brazilian has long been admired at the Emirates, with the club having tracked him across multiple transfer windows.

Although direct talks between Arsenal and Newcastle had yet to take place as of Tuesday afternoon, there is growing expectation that discussions could accelerate in the coming days.

Newcastle Determined To Keep Captain

Any deal, however, promises to be far from straightforward.

Newcastle have consistently maintained that Guimarães is not for sale and remain determined to keep one of Eddie Howe’s most influential players.

Sources indicate it would take a fee close to the £100 million package Tottenham paid to sign Sandro Tonali — £92.5 million guaranteed plus £7.5 million in add-ons — even to tempt Newcastle into negotiations.

Guimarães is currently on holiday after representing Brazil at the FIFA World Cup and is expected to return to pre-season training next week before joining Newcastle’s training camp in La Manga on July 31.

Arsenal Regroup After Transfer Setbacks

Arsenal’s renewed focus on Guimarães comes after a series of frustrations in the transfer market.

Chelsea beat the Gunners to Morgan Rogers in a British-record £117 million deal, while Arsenal also walked away from an £85 million move for Fernandes before Tottenham completed the signing. Bournemouth, meanwhile, continue to resist interest in Scott.
