Assam floods have claimed 50 lives and affected over 8 lakh people. More heavy rainfall is likely in the coming days.

For thousands of families across Assam, this year’s monsoon has unfolded with a familiar sense of dread. In Guwahati’s Rajapul area, floodwaters rose so rapidly that homes were submerged up to chest level within hours, leaving residents stranded overnight until rescue teams arrived by boat.
Across the state, the story has been much the same. Torrential rain has turned villages into islands, severed road and rail links, submerged tea gardens, and forced tens of thousands of people into relief camps. According to the TOI, the latest wave of floods has claimed 50 lives and affected more than 8 lakh people across 16 districts, with the Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries flowing above the danger mark even as more rain is forecast.
It is a scene Assam has witnessed countless times.
Every monsoon, swollen rivers swallow villages, roads disappear under muddy water, tea gardens remain submerged for days, and thousands of families move into relief camps. Rescue boats replace buses, schools become shelters and livelihoods are washed away.
This year has been no different. Relentless monsoon rains and flash floods have inundated vast stretches of Assam, affecting more than 8 lakh people across 16 districts. The floods have claimed dozens of lives, submerged thousands of villages, damaged roads and embankments, disrupted rail connectivity to Upper Assam, and forced thousands into relief camps.
Several tea estates, particularly in Sivasagar’s Nazira subdivision, remain under water, threatening one of the state’s most important industries.
Rescue operations involving the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local authorities continue as major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries, flow above the danger mark amid forecasts of more heavy rainfall.
Yet behind every flood lies a bigger question.
Why does Assam flood every single year?
A river that built Assam, the Brahmaputra is often called Assam’s lifeline.
Stretching nearly 2,900 kilometres from Tibet through Arunachal Pradesh and Assam before entering Bangladesh, it is among the world’s largest rivers by discharge. Unlike many rivers that flow in a single channel, the Brahmaputra spreads into multiple braided channels across a vast floodplain in Assam, making it naturally prone to overflowing during the monsoon.
For centuries, these floods enriched Assam’s fertile plains by depositing nutrient-rich silt that supported rice cultivation, fisheries and the tea industry.
But today, the same river has become one of India’s most destructive annual disasters.
It’s not just the rain, heavy monsoon rainfall is the most visible reason behind Assam’s floods but scientists say it is only one part of a much larger picture.
The Brahmaputra receives water from hundreds of tributaries flowing down the Himalayas and surrounding hills. During the southwest monsoon, intense rainfall occurs simultaneously across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan and neighbouring hill states.
When all these rivers swell together, enormous volumes of water converge into the Brahmaputra within a short period, overwhelming its channels.
Climate change is making this process even more intense.
Scientists say Assam’s floods are no longer driven by monsoon rainfall alone. Climate change is altering the intensity and behaviour of rainfall across the eastern Himalayas and Northeast India. Instead of steady showers spread over several days, the region is increasingly experiencing short-duration, high-intensity cloudbursts that dump enormous volumes of rain within a few hours.
These intense downpours leave little time for rivers to absorb or gradually drain the excess water. As a result, tributaries of the Brahmaputra swell almost simultaneously, sending massive surges of water into the main river.
The situation is further aggravated by warming temperatures, which allow the atmosphere to hold more moisture. According to climate scientists, every degree Celsius of warming enables the atmosphere to retain roughly 7% more water vapour, increasing the potential for extreme rainfall events.
When these moisture-laden systems collide with the steep slopes of the Himalayas and the Meghalaya Plateau, they unleash torrential rain that rapidly flows into Assam’s river network, overwhelming floodplains and triggering flash floods, prolonged inundation and widespread erosion.
Researchers warn that while annual rainfall may not rise dramatically, the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events are expected to increase, making floods more sudden, destructive and difficult to predict.
The hidden role of silt
One of the biggest reasons Assam floods repeatedly lies beneath the water itself.
The Brahmaputra carries one of the world’s highest sediment loads. Every year, rainfall, landslides and erosion in the young Himalayan mountains wash millions of tonnes of sand, gravel and silt into the river. As this sediment settles across Assam’s plains, the riverbed gradually rises.
A shallower river has less capacity to hold floodwater. When intense rains arrive, the excess water spills over banks much faster than it otherwise would.
Many hydrologists trace a major shift in the Brahmaputra’s behaviour to the 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake, which triggered massive landslides across the Himalayas. The landslides dumped enormous quantities of sediment into the river system, altering its course and increasing flood risks in the decades that followed.
Deforestation adds to the problem
Another contributing factor lies upstream. Deforestation in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and other upper catchments reduces the landscape’s ability to absorb rainfall. Instead of slowly filtering into the ground, rainwater runs rapidly into streams and rivers, carrying loose soil along with it.
The result is a double blow: faster runoff increases flood peaks, while additional sediment raises the riverbed even further over time. Scientific studies have linked land-use changes and erosion in the Brahmaputra basin with higher siltation and downstream flooding.
Why embankments haven’t solved Assam’s flood problem
For decades, embankments have been Assam’s primary defence against floods.
Thousands of kilometres of earthen embankments line the state’s rivers. Many have protected towns and farmland during moderate floods. But they are not foolproof. Repeated high flows weaken embankments, erosion undercuts foundations and breaches allow floodwaters to rush into villages within minutes.
Hydrologists also argue that embankments alone cannot solve a problem driven by sediment, river migration and changing rainfall patterns. In some places, restricting the river within embankments increases pressure during extreme floods, making breaches even more destructive.
Experts increasingly advocate a combination of river restoration, floodplain zoning, better forecasting, wetland conservation and resilient infrastructure instead of relying solely on embankments.
Assam has fought floods for generations
Flooding is not new. Major floods have repeatedly battered Assam since the 1950s, with some of the worst recorded in 1954, 1962, 1972, 1988, 1998, 2004, 2012, 2020 and 2022, besides the current floods.
The state government estimates that more than 4.27 lakh hectares of land have been lost to river erosion since 1950 an irreversible loss that has displaced thousands of families and altered the geography of entire districts.
Every major flood follows a familiar cycle:
• Villages are submerged.
• Crops are destroyed.
• Roads and railways are cut off.
• Schools become relief camps.
• Families rebuild until the next monsoon.
The tea industry pays a heavy price
Floods do not just affect homes. They also threaten one of Assam’s biggest economic pillars tea. The state produces more than half of India’s tea, with thousands of workers employed across estates in Upper Assam.
This year’s floods submerged tea gardens in districts such as Sivasagar, disrupting field operations and affecting workers’ mobility. Floodwater damages tea bushes, delays plucking cycles, reduces leaf quality and increases disease risks in plantations.
When estates remain underwater for days, production losses ripple through the supply chain. Tea factories struggle to receive fresh leaves, exports face delays and thousands of workers lose daily wages during prolonged flooding.
Tea bushes can survive temporary inundation, but prolonged waterlogging reduces leaf quality, delays harvesting and increases fungal diseases, affecting both yields and exports.
Even after water recedes, plantations often require weeks of restoration before normal harvesting resumes.
The flood doesn’t end when the water disappears
For many families, the crisis begins only after the water recedes. Contaminated drinking water raises the risk of disease, farmers lose standing crops just before harvest, children remain out of school, livestock perish and damaged homes have to be rebuilt. Many households spend months recovering financially from a disaster that lasted only a few days, only to face the same uncertainty again the following monsoon.
