CWG 2026: Indian Boxers Win Record Seven Golds; Judokas, Para Athletes Shine

India's record-breaking CWG performance, with boxers, judokas and para-athletes bagging numerous medals, including seven boxing golds.

Indian boxers delivered a record-breaking performance with a brilliant haul of seven gold medals, while judokas and para track and field athletes also made significant contributions on the country’s most successful day at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday, August 1.

India climbed to fourth in the medal standings on the penultimate day with 39 medals (13 gold, 17 silver, nine bronze). Australia led with 62 gold medals, followed by England (26) and Canada (18).

Boxers accounted for seven of India’s eight gold medals, powering the nation to its best-ever CWG performance in the sport. India topped the boxing medal table with seven gold and three silver medals.

The other gold was won by Soman Rana in the men’s F57 para shot put event.

Most gold by the boxers

India enjoyed a historic boxing campaign at the CWG, with women pugilists winning five golds and Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal adding two more titles to deliver the country’s best-ever performance in the sport.

Jaismine Lamboria, Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghanghas, Sakshi Chaudhary and Arundhati Choudhary won gold medals, while Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain bagged silver in the 75kg category.

In the men’s competition, Sachin (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (70kg) won gold medals, while Jadumani Singh (55kg) and Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal (+90kg) claimed silver.

India’s previous best boxing campaign at the CWG came in Gold Coast in 2018, when it won seven medals, including three gold.

Best-ever show by judokas

In judo, Unnati Sharma clinched a bronze medal in the women’s 63kg event to continue the nation’s historic run at the CWG.

Unnati Sharma beat South Africa’s Skye Knoester by ippon in just 1:07, sealing the win with a decisive leg hook and throw.

The Indian had earlier gone down to Australia’s Saya Middleton in the semifinal but bounced back well to bag a place on the podium with an emphatic win.

The bronze was India’s fourth medal in judo, continuing the nation’s best-ever CWG campaign in the sport.

India’s historic judo campaign was headlined by Harsh Singh (men’s -60kg) and Asmita Dey (women’s -48kg), who became the nation’s first-ever CWG judo gold medallists after winning twin titles on Friday.

Yamini Mourya added a silver in the women’s -57kg category, giving India their record haul.

India will look to add to their record medal tally on the final day, Sunday, August 2, with Ishroop Narang (women’s -78kg), Avtar Singh (men’s -100kg) and Yash Ghangas (men’s +100kg) in contention for medals.

In the final bout of the day, India’s Harsh Tokas missed out on a bronze medal in the men’s -81kg judo, losing to Australia’s Keishin Ochi by ippon.

But Inunganbi Takhellambam (women’s -70kg) and Karanjit Singh Maan (men’s -90kg) bowed out after losing their repechage bouts.

Record show by para athletes

In athletics, Soman Rana clinched gold in the men’s F57 para shot put with a season-best throw of 13.40m, leading an Indian one-two finish as Shubham Juyal took silver with 13.28m.

Gulveer Singh created history by becoming the first Indian to win a CWG 5000m medal with bronze, while also becoming the nation’s first track and field athlete to claim two medals in a single edition of the Games.

Reigning Asian champion Gulveer Singh, who won silver in the 10,000m on Tuesday, bagged bronze in the 5000m with a timing of 13:24.95 to complete a historic double on the final day of athletics competition.

India bagged a double podium finish in the men’s triple jump, with Praveen Chithravel winning silver with a 16.58m effort and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran taking bronze with 16.52m.

Jamaica’s Jordan Scott claimed gold with a jump of 16.72m.

Ramesh Shanmugam finished seventh in the men’s T54 1500m para final, while Priyanka Goswami also bagged a seventh-place finish in the women’s 10,000m race walk with a season-best timing of 45:53.93.

Ravina was disqualified in the same event.

In the men’s pole vault, national record holder Dev Kumar Meena finished fourth after clearing 5.30m while compatriot Kuldeep Kumar was sixth with 5.10m.

Indian para athletes created history at the Glasgow CWG, matching the combined medal tally of all previous editions with seven medals, including one gold and one silver on Saturday.

India’s 28-member para sports contingent ended its campaign with a historic seven-medal haul (three gold, two silver and two bronze). Track cycling and para track cycling remain on India’s schedule for Sunday.

It’s the best-ever performance by Indian para athletes at the CWG.

Since para-sports were introduced at the CWG in Manchester 2002, India had won seven medals in total, one gold, two silver and four bronze.

In the 2022 Birmingham Games, Bhavina Patel and Sonalben Patel won a gold and a bronze in para table tennis. One can only imagine the number of medals para athletes would have bagged if all sports were included.

Sudhir, who won gold in para powerlifting in Birmingham, was later stripped of his medal after failing an in-competition dope test.

In Glasgow, para track and field athletes scooped six medals: 3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze, while Jhandu Kumar clinched the other bronze in para powerlifting.

The para athletics team ended India’s 20-year wait for a CWG medal in the sport. Before Glasgow, India’s last para athletics medal came through Ranjith Kumar Jayaseelan in the men’s seated discus throw at the 2006 edition.
