Former Australia opener Davis Warner has pleaded guilty to a drink-driving offence, with the incident now casting doubt over his future as captain of the BBL franchise Sydney Thunder.

The incident took place on April 5, when Warner was in Sydney during a break from leading the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Police stopped his vehicle in Sydney's eastern suburbs, where he allegedly recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.104, which is above the legal limit.

Warner was not required to appear in Waverley Local Court on Wednesday. Instead, his lawyer Bobby Hill entered the guilty plea on his behalf. The court is scheduled to pronounce its sentence on August 18, while discussions regarding the facts of the case are still underway.

As per Hill, Warner had consumed three glasses of wine at a friend's apartment before deciding to drive home. Under Australian law, he could face a minimum six-month driving ban, a fine of up to Australian $2,200 (around Rs. 1.49 lakh) and a maximum prison sentence of nine months.

Apart from the legal consequences, the guilty plea has also put Warner's future as Sydney Thunder captain under the spotlight ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, with questions being raised over whether he will continue in the leadership role.

"Reckless and foolish," Hill said while describing Warner's decision, adding that the former Australian cricketer regrets his actions and has accepted full responsibility. The lawyer also revealed that Warner had his final drink just 11 minutes before he was pulled over by police.

Warner is expected to seek a lighter sentence, although his lawyer said the veteran batter understands he will be treated like any other offender under the law.

The guilty plea has also raised questions over Warner's leadership role with Sydney Thunder. The franchise and Cricket NSW are yet to issue an official statement, although the state body has previously maintained a strict stance against drink driving through its road safety campaigns.

Warner had earlier been barred from holding leadership positions following the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. However, that sanction was lifted in 2024, paving the way for him to become Sydney Thunder captain. His latest legal issue could now once again put that role under scrutiny.
