The boxers who gave the world a highly lucrative bout against each other again, will take each other on yet again, this time over the age of forty.

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will face each other in a highly anticipated rematch this September at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Netflix announced on Monday.
The bout between these boxing legends, who first fought in a 2015 blockbuster, comes shortly after Mayweather’s announcement of his return from retirement. Both fighters are now in their late forties.
The rematch will be broadcast live on Netflix on September 19, as the streaming platform increasingly ventures into live sports with high-profile events.
“Floyd and I gave the world the biggest fight in boxing history. The fans have waited long enough—they deserve this rematch," said Pacquiao, 47, in a joint statement.
Mayweather defeated Pacquiao in their lucrative 2015 “Fight of the Century," which generated 4.6 million pay-per-view buys but fell short of the hype. Mayweather is believed to have earned around $300 million from that unanimous points victory. The fight remains the most lucrative in history, generating over $600 million in revenue.
Mayweather, a former multi-weight world champion, retired unbeaten in 50 bouts in 2017. He has since fought in exhibition matches, including an upcoming clash this spring with Mike Tyson.
Pacquiao, also a multiple world champion, retired in 2021 for four years to run unsuccessfully for the Philippine presidency. He returned to boxing last year.
Rumours of a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch have persisted for years, intensifying after Mayweather’s announcement of his return to professional boxing.
“I already fought and beat Manny once. This time will be the same result," said Mayweather in the statement.
“I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him," Pacquiao responded.
The clash will be the first professional boxing match at the Sphere, a venue primarily used for concerts and films that opened in 2023. The venue features a 160,000-square-foot wraparound screen on its curved interior walls.
The fight will be broadcast globally on Netflix, which has around 325 million subscribers. Netflix has recently expanded its sports offerings, including a super middleweight clash between Terence Crawford and Saul “Canelo" Alvarez in Las Vegas last September, which was viewed by 41 million people.
Netflix also aired fights involving YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul against a 58-year-old Tyson in November 2024, and Anthony Joshua last December. Despite criticism for being lacklustre, these events garnered significant global attention.
Mayweather, nicknamed “Money," was once the world’s highest-paid athlete. His last professional bout was in 2017 against UFC star Conor McGregor. The 48-year-old American has been a controversial figure, often criticised for his defensive style and accusations of avoiding dangerous opponents to preserve his record. He has also spent time in prison for domestic violence incidents.
Pacquiao, known as “The National Fist" in the Philippines and “PacMan" globally, is an eight-division world champion. He is beloved in the Philippines for his rags-to-riches story, having dropped out of high school at 14 to sell donuts and work as a grocery stacker.
Having served as a Philippine senator from 2016, Pacquiao retired for four years from 2021 to run unsuccessfully for the presidency. He returned to boxing last year and was held to a draw by Mario Barrios, putting his professional record at 62-8-3.
“As always, I dedicate this fight to my fellow Filipinos around the world and to bringing glory to the Philippines," said Pacquiao.
