Fire broke out in the cellar of Narayana School in Madinaguda on Tuesday, triggering panic among students and staff, though no injuries or casualties were reported.
Smoke was first noticed billowing out of the school’s cellar, following which around 300 students, teachers and school staff left the building, preventing any mishap. An official from the Fire Control said a distress call was received at 11.27 a.m., after which a fire tender from Kukatpally was rushed to the spot, supported by an additional tender deployed for smoke exhaustion.
An official from the Kukatpally fire station said preliminary findings indicated that the fire originated in the second cellar of the building, after the security personnel allegedly burnt scrap inside. The blaze spread rapidly within the cellar as papers and documents stored on the floor caught fire leading to dense smoke.
Fire-fighters brought the situation under control, and ventilation measures were carried out to clear the smoke from the premises. Further investigation is under way to ascertain the cause of the fire.
