Five months after marrying Bhopal-based advocate Samarth Singh, 33-year-old Twisha Sharma from Noida was found dead on Tuesday night, triggering allegations of mental harassment and domestic violence by her in-laws.
According to her family, Twisha spoke to her mother over the phone at around 10:05 pm on the night of the incident and described the harassment she had allegedly been facing at her matrimonial home.
“During the conversation, she abruptly disconnected the call after her husband entered the room," said her brother, Major Harshit Sharma, an officer in the Indian Army.
“Repeated attempts were thereafter made by our family to contact her, Samarth, and her mother-in-law Giribala Singh, but no one responded," he added.
The family said that at around 10:15 pm, Giribala Singh answered their call and they urged her to immediately check on Twisha. Around five minutes later, they were informed that Twisha was “not breathing."
Twisha was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Her family has alleged that there was a delay in providing medical treatment despite the hospital being located around 10 minutes away. “They reportedly reached the hospital only around 11:30 pm," Major Sharma said.
The family has accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting Twisha to mental harassment and domestic violence. Major Sharma also alleged that she was pressured into terminating her pregnancy despite wanting to continue it.
“During her pregnancy, my sister had expressed her desire to continue and bear the child. However, she was allegedly subjected to severe pressure and coercion by her husband and in-laws to terminate the pregnancy. Her character was repeatedly questioned, and allegations were made that the child was illegitimate. Under sustained mental pressure and family coercion, the pregnancy was medically terminated," he said.
The family further alleged that Twisha was harassed over dowry and was pressured to transfer shares and investments worth Rs 20 lakh, gifted to her by her father, to her husband and in-laws.
According to the short post-mortem report, the cause of death was “antemortem hanging by ligature", indicating that she was alive at the time of hanging. The report also noted “multiple antemortem injuries" on different parts of her body.
The post-mortem findings stated that the medical termination of pregnancy had been carried out a week before her death. Viscera and blood samples have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to check for toxic substances, while nail samples have been preserved for DNA analysis.
Police have also sealed and collected her clothes and cellotape for examination, while the uterus has been preserved for histopathological analysis.
Twisha’s family has expressed concern about possible tampering of evidence, alleging that the probe could be influenced as her mother-in-law is a retired judge and her husband is a practising lawyer. They have demanded that the matrimonial home be sealed and have urged police to register an FIR at the earliest.
