A death reported from Karnataka’s Bidar district has prompted police to begin an investigation into allegations of domestic abuse within a young woman’s marital home. The incident came to light earlier this week, following a complaint filed by the woman’s family, leading authorities to examine the circumstances surrounding her death.

The deceased has been identified as Anjanabai Shekhar Patil, aged 22, a native of Bhalki town in Bidar district. She had been living with her husband’s family in Om Colony of Basavakalyan, where the incident occurred. Police said her body was found hanging inside the house. Preliminary findings suggest suicide, though officials have said the matter is under investigation.

Marriage and Family Background

Anjanabai married Shekhar Patil in 2022. After the marriage, she moved to Basavakalyan, where her husband’s family resides. The couple had an 11-month-old infant. According to police officials, Anjanabai had been staying at her marital home since the wedding.

Following her death, her natal family raised concerns about her treatment after marriage, prompting them to approach the police and seek legal action.

Allegations Raised by the Family

Anjanabai’s father, Vijaykumar, lodged a formal complaint with the police, alleging that his daughter had been subjected to continuous mental and physical harassment by her husband and in-laws. Based on his statement, police registered a case detailing serious allegations of abuse.

The complaint alleges that Anjanabai was pressured into prostitution by members of her husband’s family and faced repeated violence after refusing to comply. Vijaykumar has stated that his daughter was assaulted for resisting demands to engage in illicit relationships and that the prolonged abuse caused her severe mental trauma in the months leading up to her death as reported by ndtv.com.

Police Action and Custody

Police officials said the allegations include domestic violence, coercion and intimidation. Acting on the complaint, local police booked three accused in the case, including Anjanabai’s husband, Shekhar Patil. The other two accused are reportedly members of his family.

All three accused have been taken into custody. Police said statements are being recorded from family members, neighbours and others who may have information relevant to the case.

Investigation Continues

Investigators are examining evidence from the house and working to establish the sequence of events that led to Anjanabai’s death. Police officials said further legal action would depend on the findings of the investigation and forensic reports.

Senior officers said the case is being handled with seriousness and assured that all allegations would be thoroughly examined to ensure accountability. The incident and related allegations have also been reported by ndtv.com.
