Even as the Centre makes another push to end the standoff over the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led student protests in the national capital, negotiations remain locked over two key sticking points.

Government sources said former BJP president and Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh are scheduled to meet the CJP delegation immediately after the Lok Sabha is adjourned on Wednesday. The meeting will be held at a neutral venue, marking a departure from earlier plans after the protesters insisted that Union ministers come to them rather than asking the delegation to visit a government office.

Despite the fresh outreach, sources said negotiations continue to be difficult.

1. Resignation Demand Remains The Biggest Hurdle

According to government sources, activist Sonam Wangchuk and the CJP leadership continue to insist on the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan before any substantive progress can be made.

The Centre, however, is unwilling to concede this demand, making it the principal roadblock in the negotiations.

2. Govt Claims Goalposts Are Being Shifted

Government sources alleged that while the Centre had indicated its willingness to discuss the issue in Parliament and continue dialogue, the protesters and Opposition have now made ministerial resignations a precondition for discussions.

“By now demanding resignation before discussion, they are shifting the goalposts," a government source said, adding that this has complicated efforts to arrive at a consensus.

Sources said both sides remain engaged in talks, with the Centre hoping that Wednesday’s meeting can help bridge the differences.

The latest round follows Tuesday night’s meeting between JP Nadda, Dr Jitendra Singh and activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital, after which government sources had expressed hope of a breakthrough and reiterated that the “doors for conversation are wide open".

The Centre had also conveyed its willingness to hold a discussion in Parliament on the issue, one of the demands raised by Wangchuk. However, with the demand for Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation still firmly on the table, negotiators are now attempting to find common ground and break the deadlock.
