Actor Kaylee Hottle, who won hearts with her role as Jia in the Godzilla film franchise, has died following a car accident in Maryland, United States. She was 18.
The tragic news was confirmed by her father, Joshua Hottle, who shared the update in an emotional live stream using American Sign Language (ASL). According to reports, Kaylee was seriously injured in a road accident earlier on Tuesday.
Joshua said he rushed from Texas to Maryland after learning about the crash. He later received devastating news from officials that Kaylee suffered cardiac arrest while being taken to hospital. Despite efforts by medical teams, she could not be saved.
Became a Fan Favourite Through the MonsterVerse
Kaylee Hottle rose to international fame in 2021 after playing Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong. Her character, a deaf orphan who shares a close bond with Kong through sign language, became one of the emotional highlights of the film.
She returned to the role in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, released in 2024, once again earning praise from audiences for her heartfelt performance.
Her portrayal of Jia also brought authentic deaf representation to one of Hollywood's biggest blockbuster franchises.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Kaylee came from a multi-generational deaf family. She began acting at a young age and first appeared in commercials, including a public service announcement for the video messaging app Glide, a platform widely used by the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
Her success in Hollywood inspired many young deaf actors and highlighted the importance of inclusive casting in mainstream films.
Besides her film career, Kaylee also appeared in the reboot of Magnum P.I.. She played the character Joon in an episode of the show's fourth season, adding another credit to her growing acting career.
Although her filmography was brief, many industry watchers believed she had a bright future ahead.
Kaylee's sudden death has left fans of the MonsterVerse and members of the deaf community deeply saddened. She was admired not only for her acting talent but also for helping bring greater visibility to deaf performers in Hollywood.
She is survived by her family. Her passing marks the loss of one of the industry's promising young talents, whose performances touched audiences around the world despite a career that had only just begun.
