A theft on the high-security premises of Vidhana Soudha has triggered alarm over possible lapses in access control and monitoring at Karnataka’s seat of power.
According to the complaint filed with the local police, the incident took place in the office of Congress minister Byrathi Suresh, from where a handbag containing about 300 grams of gold jewellery and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash went missing.
Police said the bag belonged to Naveen, who had visited the minister’s office for official work.
He reportedly carried the handbag with him during the visit but inadvertently left it behind on the office premises.
Naveen realised the bag was missing only when he returned the following day and subsequently lodged a complaint at the Vidhana Soudha police station.
During the preliminary investigation, officials scrutinised CCTV footage installed inside the complex.
The footage, police said, indicated the involvement of a D-group employee attached to the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR).
Visuals reportedly showed the employee picking up the handbag from within the office area and leaving with it.
Based on the evidence, the suspect was identified and taken into custody.
Police confirmed that the accused was arrested, and further investigation was underway to establish the sequence of events and whether anyone else was involved in the theft.
Authorities have not yet commented on whether additional security audits will be ordered following the incident.
Police said further details would emerge as the probe progresses and once questioning of the arrested employee is completed.
