In a move to eradicate signs from the colonial past, the Indian Army has undertaken a huge exercise to rename 246 roads, buildings and facilities across its military establishments and name them under Indian war veterans, including Arun Khetrapal, Abdul Hamid, Dhan Singh Thapa, Sunda Singh, and Piru Singh.

The exercise is part of a continued effort to erase signs and symbols from the colonial area, reinforcing an identity stemming from India’s own military heritage and might, honouring the nation’s gallantry awardees, war heroes and distinguished military leaders, Indian Army officials said, as reported by Times of India.

According to the report, the exercise will see the renaming of 124 roads, 77 residential colonies, 27 buildings, and military facilities. 18 other facilities, including parks, training areas, sports grounds, gates and helipads, will also be covered.
